World Vision has launched an emergency response following the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit Myanmar's Shan State.
"We are still in the process of understanding the effects of the earthquake, though we know that many people have lost family members, livelihoods and homes. We have now identified the areas of greatest concern and our relief efforts will focus there," said Chris Herink, National Director of World Vision Myanmar.
The latest media reports indicate that 74 people were killed and 111 injured. The hardest hit areas of Tar Lay and Mong Lin townships are in the Tarchilek district. Both townships have a total population of 15,593. Initial Government reports estimate over USD 4 million worth of damage.
"As we go further in the affected areas, we see collapsed houses, broken roads, destroyed monasteries and government buildings. The most urgent needs now are food, water, basic first aid supplies and temporary shelters since it has started raining," said Herink.
As part of an initial response, World Vision has distributed 1,500 litres of water and food for 1,350 people yesterday.
Other planned activities include distribution of tarpaulins as temporary shelters to 2,500 families, establishment of child friendly spaces and providing supplies to help re-establish the hospital in Tar Lay. The basic first aid supplies to be provided include antibiotics, IV drip kits, bandages, antiseptic, syringes and hydrocortisone injections.
World Vision will participate in comprehensive joint assessment of the hardest-hit areas together with the Myanmar Red Cross, UNICEF and other INGOs.
